Brick City Theatre youth create and perform the Stokes Brothers’ story

Reflecting on the Stokes Brothers' Legacy

February 2, 2017

5:30 - 7:00 pm

Lakeview Terrace Community Center, 1290 W 25th St, Cleveland, OH 44113

A special Black History Month showcase exhibiting the original artwork and performance material created by the youth participants of Cleveland Public Theatre’s Brick City Theatre program, in partnership with Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority. During this session, Brick City Theatre participants engaged in performance activities such as drama, dance, singing and creative writing with a special focus on the legacy of the Stokes brothers. When exploring this topic, Brick City Theatre participants wrote original rewrites of the Stokes brothers’ story and explored their own life stories. These final performances are a culmination of our extended learning process at Brick City Theatre.

Over 150 residents of Lakeview Terrace, Woodhill Homes, and Outhwaite Homes – youth ages 5-14, plus parents, grandparents, siblings and friends – have participated in arts experiences that nurture self-expression, encourage family collaboration and intergenerational exchange, support academic achievement, develop life skills, and provide personal enrichment.

Brick City Theatre is conducted after school, up to 4 days per week in the public housing Community Centers at Lakeview, Woodhill, and Outhwaite. Participants at each site created their own reflections on the Stokes brothers’ story, so each of the three performances will feature a wholly different play.

A community meal follows each presentation.
