2017 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) African American Read-In
February 15, 2017
11 am-2:30 pm
Tri-C Eastern Campus, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center Simon and Rose Mandel Theatre Lobby, 4250 Richmond Road, Highland Hills, OH 44122
The African American Read-In (AARI), established by the Black Caucus of NCTE, is built on an ambitious yet confident premise: that a school and community reading event can be an effective way to promote diversity in children’s literature, encourage young people to read, and shine a spotlight on African American authors. As we celebrate the 25th year since the event was created, it appears that it’s not only made progress toward these goals, but will continue to be an inspiration to schools and communities for some time to come.
Each panelist below will have approximately 5-10 minutes to share a brief selection from their favorite African American author. Also, in keeping with our theme “Celebrating Our Legacy”, they will briefly share their personal definition of the word “legacy”. Panelists include:
- Marsha Mockabee, President, Urban League of Cleveland
- Rev. Paul Hobson Sadler, Sr, Senior Pastor, Mt. Zion Congregational United Church of Christ
- Rev. Hilton O. Smith, Assistant Pastor, Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church
- Marjorie Malcolm, President, National Council of Negro Women Western Reserve Section
- Brian E. Hall, Chief Executive Officer, Innogistics, LLC
- Deniece Diggins, Editor-in-Chief of The Voice, Mandel Scholar
- Dr. Lauren Onkey, Dean, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center
This is a casual, relaxed event. All are welcome.
